Rabbit: The Thumper Family Story

We were sleeping in our nest in Southwest Iowa when we heard a whooshing sound. It was a big dog. You see we live on the ground in a nest, and that’s how the dog found us. He sniffed around and found us. He picked up one of my brothers and carried him off. We knew it was a dog even though we did not have our eyes open yet. The dog kept coming back until all of us were taken from the nest.

The next thing I remember is being held and some warm liquid going down my throat, it did not taste too bad so I started licking it and eating. I kicked and screamed and wiggled but the hand that held me did not drop me or hurt me.

When I opened my eyes I saw a human and it scared me. My siblings and I tried to jump away but the human kept picking us up and feeding us.

She put in some clover one day. MMMM that was good. From then on we didn’t have to eat the formula, we got clover and nice juicy grass. It was wonderful.

We finally got too big for our enclosure, so “Mom” took us to a huge place with lots of tall grass and it was quiet. I slowly hopped out into the tall grass and my siblings followed suit one at a time. We all jumped into the tall grass and disappeared.
