How to Contact a Rehabilitator and Why
If you cannot locate a rehabber in your
area please contact your conservation office, vet clinic, humane
society, animal shelter, or use
Wildlife International's Rehab Search. If you are still having
trouble please contact the
Symbiotic Wildlife Rehabilitation Society
for more information.
Most of these critters can be very cute but keeping the animal is
discouraged because of many reasons.
- The main reason is a rehabilitator
knows the correct way to care for the wild one, from the correct
formula, to teaching the critter how to be wild. If the critter does
not learn how to be afraid of predators (humans) it will not survive
and can never be returned to the wild.
- To keep a wild one as a pet is also
illegal. You must have permits from local, state, and/or federal
governments to keep these animals. Wildlife rehabilitators have these
permits.
- There are diseases that can be
passed from wild animals to you, and your pets, and vice versa. A rehabilitator is trained in these diseases and the proper way to
protect the animal and everyone around it.
